The Canine and Abled, Inc. Dogs---Opening doors for service dog teams everywhere....
Dewey - Kimberly's First Service Dog
Dawson  - Kimberly's Second Service Dog (retired), now Certified Therapy dog
Tasks performed: Pulled wheelchair, braced like a cane when Kimberly was learning how to walk again. Seizure-alert.
Breed: St. Bernard/German Shepherd mix
Age: Was 15 years old at the time of his death in September, 2005.  Click HERE to go to Dewey's Memorial Page and learn how this amazing dog touched so many lives..
True Facts:
*Dewey was certified at the unprecedented age of six years old (most service dogs start training at eight weeks!)
*Dewey taught Kimberly how to live again, and made it possible for her to resume a normal life.
*Dewey was instrumental in the implementation of Canine and Abled, Inc. Kimberly continues their mission in his honor.
*Dewey was a dog that Kimberly rescued four years prior to her accident..he just so "happened" to have the ability to alert to seizures...Kimberly is sure that he was a four-footed guardian angel sent to her.  To view more pictures and learn more about this incredible dog, click on his photo below.
Breed: Rough Collie
Tasks performed: Object retrieval, cognitive support, seizure-alert/support, opening/closing doors, turning on/off lights, helping with the laundry --now that Dawson is retired, he keeps himself busy with Therapy work, C&A demos and booksignings where he loves to meet his "fans!"
Birthday: July 21, 2000
True Facts:
*Dawson was chosen out of about 500 Collies for his superior retrieval skills.
* Dawson can detect seizures, though Kimberly is seizure-free these days!  However, that same skill kicks in when Kimberly has a fever.  Dawson will "alert" all the other family members to let them know she's not well.
* Dawson's favorite toy is a ball-point pen.
*Dawson loves to travel! He has quite a few miles under his belt, and is always up for a car ride---no matter where we go!  Which is kind of funny, because when we first got him, he got violently car sick anytime he got near a car! It was so bad, that it nearly prevented him from being a service dog!  Dawson was trained to relax in the car, and now he wants to go everywhere! ;-)
Canine and Abled's Gracie!
Therapy Dog
Breed: Shihtzu/Bichon mix
Age: Was born September 16, 2005
Tasks Performed: Gracie is a certified Therapy Dog. Her job is to visit people in hospitals and nursing homes and make people feel better!  She's such a funny, little dog!  Gracie also demonstrates with the Canine and Abled program. She loves to perform and in our demo, she dances, rolls over, does advanced obedience maneuvers  and also demonstrates agility skills to compliment Canine and Abled's stage show.
Canine and Abled's Nadja;
Service Dog
Breed: German Shepherd (black, plush coat)
Age: Was born June 26th (my birthday, too!) 2006
Tasks Performed: Nadja is Dawson's protege and is now my service dog.  She is a fabulous retriever and has mastered opening/closing doors, retrieving objects from all over the house, lights, helping with the laundry, physical support (bracing like a cane), cognitive support, can reach groceries from shelf and deposit them into shopping cart, throw away trash, and.....is a fabulous soccer/frisbee player!!!
